Marathon Madness in NYC!

Thursday, October 30, 2008 13:58 No Comments

Hi! It’s Meaghan again, hijacking the blog. The New York City Marathon is only 3 days away. Ahhhhhh!!!! I’ve been training my butt off injury-free (knock wood!) since July, but I’m still NERVOUS. I’m gunning/running for a PR (personal record) of 3:30. That means averaging (gulp) 8-minute miles. Help me reach my goal! Sign up for “fan alert” on the official New York City Marathon website. Here’s the link: http://fanalert.ingnycmarathon.org/Alerts.aspx. Every time I cross a split you will be emailed or texted my time. Knowing I have cheerleaders will totally kick my butt. Plus, I think it’s pretty simple to register. Just enter my name or my bib number, which is 17601.  Thank you, thank you in advance!

More NYC Marathon news: There are some AMAZING female athletes in town right now. Here’s the rundown (pun intended!):

THURSDAY: World-class runner Paula Radcliffe (she won the NYC Marathon last year just 10 months after having a baby!) and her rival first-time NYC Marathoner Kara Goucher (you know this Olympic middle-distance runner from the August issue of SELF. Yes, she was the one with the sick abs! Here’s the link to the story: http://www.self.com/fitness/workouts/2008/07/olympic-athletes-inspiration-slideshow. Confession: I’m routing for Kara. She would be the first American woman to win the NYC marathon since 1977!) will be at Niketown New York, 6 East 57th Street, at 6pm to give some pro pointers, answer questions, and pose for pictures.

THURS/FRI/SAT: Norwegian marathoner Grete Waitz is also making the rounds. She won the NYC Marathon 9 times between 1978 and 1988 and nabbed a silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Kind of makes you feel like an underachiever, no?! Here’s a shot of her in action. And holy autograph signings:

Thursday, October 30, 4:30-5:30pm

New York Running Company: The Shops at Columbus Circle, #210 59th St.

Friday, October 31, 1:00-2:00pm

Urban Athletics: 2 World Financial Center, 225 Liberty St.

Saturday, November 1, 2:00-3:00pm

Paragon Sports: 867 Broadway

FRIDAY/SAT: Pinch me! I will be doing a 3-mile training run with Olympian Deena Kastor on Friday morning. I HEART her! She caps off each day with a good glass of wine and makes a mean fig pizza. I was devastated when she broke her foot at mile three of this year’s Olympics. I’ll get a status report on her injury on Friday. Here’s a picture of the two of us at a recent Asics event. She will also be signing autographs at the ASICS booth at the NYC Marathon Expo at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center, Halls 3E 11th Avenue at 35th Street, on Saturday.

A+ Teacher

After all my hype about Zumba, my friend from Boston called today to let me know that last night she gave it a second chance. And this time, she’s hooked. She tried a new studio, had a new teacher, and loved it! Which got me to thinking… a great  teacher really does make for a great class (I think that goes for school too). That’s why I can’t say enough about my Zumba teacher Maria and my Boot Camp instructor Sharon :) I’m lucky. I really do look forward to those classes each week.  Hope there are more great teachers out there who keep classes fun and interesting. I’m off to the treadmill for a nice/slow 2-3 mile run.
