Hunger here?

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 21:09 No Comments
Since I have this wonderful forum to talk about food with thousands of people, I wanted to focus for a moment on the topic of hunger in America. Food is something that many of us in the US take for granted. Having too much food, as opposed to too little, is generally the buzz in the news media. But it is important to remember that increasing numbers of Americans are going hungry. With the economy in a slump, people around the country are losing jobs and running out of money. Food banks are feeling the strain of high demand.
I saw an article in today’s news and I have to admit I was stunned to learn the most recent statistics. According to a recent survey by the US Department of Agriculture, 35.5 million people sometimes lack enough food to eat, and 10.1 million adults and children (roughly the population of Michigan!) often go hungry. It’s hard to believe that that’s happening here! If you are interested in learning more about this issue, how you can take action, or experiencing a food shortage yourself, there are several good charitable organizations that you can contact. One of the largest is Feeding America, www.feedingamerica.org. You can also find regional food aid organizations by searching on charitynavigator.org. With the holidays just around the corner, a local food charity could be a great place to give time or money to help bring some good cheer to those in need.

Sorry… totally unoriginal!

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 18:45 No Comments

Okay so I had a ton of meetings all morning and was out for lunch. I know it is totally lame, but I had the same thing at Cosi as last week! My apologies for being so unoriginal! I really should have gotten a salad just to mix things up a bit, but as I was standing in line I had a craving for that Roasted Veggie sandwich again! I think that the feta spread that they use is what makes it so good. Anyway, given the “dry carrot” experience of last week, I opted for the chips this time. These were pretty salty and I only had about half the bag. The sandwich was great, but next time I’m out I promise I will get something different! :) Even I get into a “food rut” from time to time.

Line Hops

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 14:16 No Comments

I’m teaching class this morning at 9 and then I’m headed to the city to see the Radio City Christmas Show with the family. I’m excited, it should be a blast. But before I go….here’s another boot camp buster. It’s a line hop with a twist.

Thumbnail image for IMG_2228.JPGMake four boxes on the ground (use resistance bands, tape, or chalk) and number them 1-4. Now instead of just side to side or front to back jumps you can create all new patterns. Try moving diagonally from 1,4, or jump 1,2,3 and 4. It’s a simple change that helps keep line hops interesting! Try 30 second intervals in between toning moves. Have a good day!

*Hint: keeping those feet together when you jump makes it harder :)

Simple Breakfast and Some Inspiration

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 14:02 No Comments

Good Morning!

I hope that everyone’s day is off to a good start.
I’m just back from a walk with Ollie. I woke up late and forgot to grab some food on the way out, so I was very hungry when I got back. It’s important to eat within an hour or so of waking, so that you give your body the energy it needs to start the day. (Note to self: eat before you walk the dog!!)
Since I was in a rush to eat when I got home, I decided that a simple bowl of cereal with milk, fruit, yogurt, juice (I had grapefruit today to mix it up a bit!) would do the trick. This was a good breakfast…nothing fancy, but enough to get the day started.
Over breakfast, I read a very inspiring article from today’s NY Times about therapy dogs that are trained to help disabled veterans regain a sense of independence. What a great story about the bond between humans and canines! A few years ago I thought about getting Ollie certified as a therapy dog so that he could make hospital visits, but he was a little too young. Now he’s 6 and probably the ideal age for that kind of training. I’m definitely going to look into it!A
