Type 2 diabetes warrants year-round awareness
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 14:21Although Diabetes Awareness Month (November) is now over, the importance of raising awareness continues. Twenty-four million Americans now have the disease and those numbers are expected to explode over the next decade, thanks to our rising obesity rates. Once known as "adult onset diabetes," Type 2 diabetes is also on the rise in children.
It doesn't have to be this way. Of all the serious diseases that most commonly affect us (heart disease, cancer, etc.), diabetes is the one over which you have the MOST direct influence. This past Sunday, I did a segment on WBALTV in Baltimore, stressing that people with or at risk of Type 2 diabetes are very much in control of their destiny. Watch here: http://www.wbaltv.com/video/
