Weight Related Cancer on the Rise
Friday, February 27, 2009 0:18With more than 300 million adults now considered obese and with the rise of childhood obesity many
doctors believe we must prepare health care systems for a wave of weight-related cancer diagnoses.
Although children may not suffer as many effects during their youth, their chances for developing a weight related health issue multiplies as they age.
When Professor Pritchard-Jones spoke at World Cancer Day she remarked that "Childhood is the time when the habits of a lifetime are established. If you want healthy adults you have to start by making healthy children. If we don't do something about tackling how much exercise our young people take and how concerned they are about what they eat and their weight, we are going to have another explosion of cancers, to which unhealthy lifestyles will be a significant, contributory factor."
Nearly one-third of all cancer in Western countries is due to lack of exercise, poor nutrition, and from weight-related health issues. We have the chance right now to change things for our children, but first we must work on ourselves and create our own healthy lifestyle.
We need to be the role models for exercising and eating right.
