SELFs Avocado-Mango Chicken (dinner 4.29.09)

Thursday, April 30, 2009 4:02 No Comments

My sister invited me over for dinner tonight after she read the blog in the morning and saw that I would be home alone! (Side note: reading the blog is how most of my family and friends know what is going on with me) She made one of SELF’s recipes, Avocado-Mango Chicken. It was very tasty – lots of bold flavors, all of which I love (mango, lime juice, cilantro, adobo sauce). Instead of a corn tortilla we had it with rice. I made some cookies for dessert, so her healthy efforts were voided by my contribution to the meal (not very dietitian-ish I realize), but we didn’t care because the cookies were good. Here is SELF’s picture of the dish and then my picture, I need to work on my food styling!

This afternoon I snacked on banana bread (half whole wheat) and some pita chips, hummus and tabbouleh.

Oh yeah, how could I forget the cookies, I had 2!

Manufacturing Marathon!

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 22:19 No Comments

You have no idea what goes into making a killer
sneaker–trust me. And neither did I until I packed up and headed to the New
Balance Sports Research Lab just outside of Boston while the town was gearing up for the famous marathon. As the assistant fitness editor
here at SELF, and of course an exercise junkie, I was blown away by how much is
required to get a pair of New Balance shoes into a box and onto a shelf! We saw
it all from the inspiration boards to the actual manufacturing (can you believe
that factory alone churns out 5,000 pair of shoes every day!) to the extensive
performance testing, which I found absolutely fascinating.

Throughout the day, I was hooked up to infrared sensors to
test my foot pressure, had my gate assessed on the coolest most state-of-the
art treadmill I have ever seen, and laced on tons of different models while
blindfolded (well sort of–you’ll see) to learn how the New Balance team tracks
customer perceptions. Here I am with the Associate PR Manager Kristen Sullivan
in the factory. How hot is our protective eyewear:

And check out the slideshow from my awesome day!

  9. Look closely. That’s not a shoe! It’s a 3-D model from a printer!I

Working out in a thong!

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 18:08 1 Comment

After my girlfriend’s jokes about my granny panty lines in class, yesterday for the
IMG_3519.JPGfirst time in all of my exercising life, I worked out in a thong! Now I’m not a thong kind of girl to begin with, so the thought of being sweaty in a thong sounded really uncomfortable. Turns out after an hour of cardio, it wasn’t so bad. In fact, I barely noticed the lack of material on my tush. I’m not sure if I’ll be leaving the cotton jockeys behind, but here and there change is good. Now maybe I’ll even give the shorts with built-in underwear a chance. Have you braved the fitness world in a thong, or are you a full coverage girl like me?
