All Day Outside! (lunch 5.20.09)

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 19:24 No Comments

If I could stay outside all day I would! It’s beautiful out so I spent the morning with a friend at the park in our neighborhood. Of course we timed it around our babies eating times and not our own so when I got home I was pretty hungry. My friend and I agreed to plan better next time and bring lunch for us – maybe some Sebastian’s salads or sandwiches! I had brought a big bottle of water and a bag of trail mix with me (dried fruit mostly and a few nuts) so that held me for a little while, at least long enough to get back to the house, walk Bruce and feed Will. I just sat down to have a quick yogurt and some goldfish but I need to hurry because we have to leave for swimming soon!

Wii love it!

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 16:20 No Comments

It’s Karina, back with the lowdown on another cool and techie fitness tool. Earlier this week, the fitness team sent me to try out a new product for the Wii: EA Sports Active.A

Even though I prefer to take my workouts outside, I’ve always wanted to try exercising with the Wii. I, of course, jumped right in when Jen, the EA Sports Active PR rep, offered me the chance to try a mini workout with the video game. I was a little nervous about figuring out how to use the controller, but luckily, the program and my avatar (who was configured to look like me!) explained and demonstrated everything.A

Jen customized a four-minute workout of sport activities, cardio and strength, and before I knew it we were off running around a track (in place, really, but our speed dictated how quickly our avatars made it around the track), hitting a heavy bag for cardio boxing and my personal favorite: inline skating. For the inline skating I had to sink into a squat, arms extended behind and jump when my avatar skated over a certain part of the course ramps. What a workout!A

All the moves put a new spin on what can sometimes be grueling exercises, such as squats, which made it a lot of fun. I was so distracted making sure I was nailing my inline skating jumps I completely ignored the burn starting to develop in my thighs. That was definitely a workout plus! And what I first thought was the one drawback of the workout – having to hold the controller just so in order to register movement – actually forced me to focus on my form, which could always use more attention.

I clearly loved inline skating. I learned soon after this picture to extend my arms back farther to speed up my avatar.

I only tried a few of the many activities and exercises the fitness video game offers (and which Bob Greene, Oprah’s trainer, helped design), which includes circuit training, to strength workouts, cardio and games. The program also has pre-designed workouts, create-your-own options and even a food journal. Another interesting component of EA Sports Active is the 30-day challenge. We love challenges here at SELF and for this one, you set fitness goals that your “trainer in a box” helps you reach with recommended workouts. It’s two days on, one off for 30 days.

Jen and I did a split-screen partner workout, which made the game a team effort and also a little more competitive!

I’m a firm believer that exercise should be fun, and EA Sports Active was definitely a good time! The video game is officially out as of yesterday; check out the videos on their site, easportsactive.com.

This weekend is the traditional opening of the summer grilling season (although we pretty much grill year-round at my house, snow or no!). Grilling is a quick, convenient, and delicious way to prepare many foods. However, grilling also presents a…

Going Swimming! (breakfast 5.20.09)

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 13:19 No Comments

It’s going to be another nice day – even warmer than yesterday was! In the spirit of warm weather, I am going swimming today — not in the ocean though, in the pool with Will for his first swim class. I got a new bathing suit this weekend (on-sale) and I am all set to go. I am hoping he enjoys this class so that we can enjoy the beach all summer! Class is not until later this afternoon so we’ll use the morning to take our walk and get things done around the house. I had a bowl of cereal (Mini Wheat Little Bites) with skim milk and a banana for my breakfast. I need to refresh my cereal stash because we are all out now (I usually keep about 3 different kinds in there at once). We are going away for the long weekend though so I am not going to do a big shop this week – just meal to meal. Have a great day!

From Diet Blog Share: I am 5′3″, age 18, and weigh around 116Ibs. I used to be 109Ibs at one point because I barely ate, and exercised a lot. But, then I moved and my dad keeps a lot of sugary foods in the…
