We Like it Real! (lunch 5.28.09)

Thursday, May 28, 2009 19:54 No Comments

From the comments left on last night’s dinner post, it seems to me like most people enjoy “the real thing” when it comes to small portions of higher calorie food vs larger portions of lower calorie foods. Like I said last night, there is no right or wrong, it’s just interesting to see where people stand on that topic. It seems like one of those butter or margarine questions – maybe today we are all feeling that real (richer calorie) food is better than highly processed (lower calorie) food but we may all be saying something different in 5 years, right?! I think food gets so much attention – sometimes good, sometimes bad – but recently the attention has been put back on local growing, as well as organic and small crops. I think because we are seeing more of this food available to us at local markets we are able to appreciate it and see the difference as compared to mass manufactured goods. Perfect discussion in time for summer when our farmer’s markets will be filled up with local goods like produce, dairy, flowers, honey, bread and more! If you have the chance this summer try to shop your local farmer’s market and try some of the food — see if you can see a difference, I bet you can! Check out Local Harvest to find a farmer’s market near you!

For lunch today I had a salad from Sebastian’s because I was out in the car and figured it would be the only way I would eat a salad for lunch. I have talked a lot about Sebastian’s and how great it is – here is what it looks like from the ordering position…

You just stand in front of this nice glass window and look at all the salad parts, then you go down the line and tell them what you want. It goes in the big silver bowl for a mixing and then into an eco-friendly paper box for take-out. Today I did the usual mixed green, chicken, carrots, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, red & green peppers, kidney beans, black beans, beets, raisins, and blue cheese (I figure a little of the “real” stuff is okay since everything else was naturally low calorie and healthy!). I got balsamic dressing on the side. It was a filling lunch and I still have half left over for later. I might eat that before my meeting tonight just in case dinner is late.

Hi, fitness readers! It’s Karina again! About a year ago I strapped on my sneaks to walk around a track all night for the annual Relay for Life event at my university. This year, Relay for Life, which is the largest nonprofit fundraiser in the world, celebrates 25 years of helping those affected by cancer find hope and working to abolish all forms of the disease.

Ask Monica: If I’m restricting carbs, do I need to restrict fruits and vegetables?

Thursday, May 28, 2009 14:35 No Comments

Q. I’ve read that you need to restrict carbs and calories in any diet attempt. However, I’ve also read that one should consume lots of fruits and veggies, both of which are primarily carbs. What do I do? A. First,…
