I Disagree with this Weight Loss Tip…
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 1:48I just read an article recommending that people stay away from golf, basketball, and tennis when they’re trying to lose weight. The author of the article recommended that you can only burn a significant amount of calories by using a Stairmaster, treadmill, or bike.
I’m not sure why, since all three of those activities burn a fair amount of calories and they’re a fun way to get some exercise in. Even golf can be a nice change of pace to other exercise regimens since when you are walking 18 holes you’re completing more than 3 miles and about 4 hours of being on your feet.
Here are some other statistics for 1 hour of exercise (based on a 170lb person):
- Basketball burns 618 calories per hour
- Tennis burns 540 calories per hour
- Golf burns 347 calories per hour
Considering that using a bike or elliptical will only burn about 541 calories (maximum) in that same 60 minutes I’d say you should do what you like and pass on the advice that you have to be in the gym to burn calories!
