Is Low Carb still the Craze? – 1
Tuesday, April 27, 2010 23:47There is still ongoing controversy about low carb diets. Many traditional weight loss establishments still strongly adhere to the high carb, low fat food guide pyramid which has been around for decades. This was one of the first food models endorsed by the government. For some this plan still works.
I’ve also seen slightly lower carbohydrate plans be successful with 40%-50% total carbohydrate consumption. But it seems that even lower carb plans are quicker for weight loss for many individuals and they frequently promote good blood work findings. (Recently research from the Journal of the American Medical Association stated: "Increased carbohydrate consumption has been associated with a lipid profile associated with cardiovascular heart disease risk." So consuming excess carbs are now getting the boot from a health standpoint.)
Low carb diet gurus argue that consuming carbs cause hormonal changes suggesting that we store more fat causing hormonal shifts altering the way we lose weight. This all started back in the 80’s with Atkins and the low carb diets never died. Now Gary Taubes is adding more twists and turns in his book on weight loss. He spends a large part of his book related to current health issues. I will comment more on his book Good Calories, Bad Calories later in the week.
Readers, what are your thoughts on low carb diets?
