New Plan (breakfast 12.11.08)

Thursday, December 11, 2008 11:31

The baby must have tired himself out yesterday because he slept through most of the night and just woke up early this morning to eat. By the time he finished I looked at the clock and it was after 6am so I figured I would stay up rather than try to get a couple more hours of sleep. This may be a good new plan -- he usually falls alseep for a couple hours after his morning feeding so I can eat, shower and get a couple things done I hope!! Although, you would think after yesteday that I would realize no two days are going to be alike with a one-month old but wishful thinking never hurts I guess! I must still be in speed-eater mode even though Will's asleep because I went straight for the cereal and milk again. I could have had eggs and toast but I didn't want to waste any of my quiet time...and I didn't want to start doing dishes so early in the day!

The Youth Obesity Solution

Thursday, December 11, 2008 10:06

Parents, your child's life is at stake and it's time to make a change... Failure to take action NOW will be something you regret forever...
That's a pretty powerful statement - festooned right on the cover of the book no less. It's alarmist, it's convicting and (as scary as it may sound), it's true.

Brian Grasso, founder of the International Youth Conditioning Association is an extremely intelligent, introspective individual. Naturally, I expected a detailed insight into the root causes of childhood obesity - a presentation of a deep psychological model, combined with the latest in cutting edge exercise advice. I was pleasantly disappointed...

A Low-Calorie Chicken Salad

Thursday, December 11, 2008 9:22

Chicken salad is usually full of high fat mayonnaise which makes it not such a good choice for something to eat when you are working on weight loss. Chicken Salad with Couscous though, is a chicken salad that you can incorporate into your meal plan because it uses a citrus dressing which is low in calories and fat. This salad also incorporates grains which adds to the fiber content of the dish.

Each serving has 375 calories, 8 grams of fat, and 4 grams of fiber. ND's Fullness Factor rates this dish with a 3.3. This salad makes a filling lunch to take to the office or can be a satisfying dinner on a night when you need a quick meal to put together. A nutritional profile of this recipe is available. Don't forget to save this recipe to your My ND Recipes.

Is It Time to Stop Running?

Thursday, December 11, 2008 4:06

In yesterday’s article I spoke about how you can incorporate low impact exercises into your program to Is_it_time_to_stop_running either give your body a rest from pounding the pavement, hitting the weights, or just give your mind a break from your typical routine.

Today, I want to give you permission to say to yourself it’s okay not to run.

I can’t tell you how many times a week I hear people online and off talking about how their knees and back bother them while they’re running. I have to ask… why do you keep doing it then?

Give yourself a break from it and realign your ankles, knees, and hips before you force your body to compensate for the pressure applied to it while running. I personally think running is a fantastic addition to your weight loss program, but if you’re hurting after every run is it really helping you?

I think that any exercise that has the ability to set you back in terms of injury just isn’t worth your time. There are so many options to choose from that it just doesn’t make sense to do any exercise that causes you pain.

Remember, you can always go back to these exercises once you worked out any imbalances or strengthened certain areas that needed work. You very well may be able to add running back into your program… but, it could be a couple of months before you are fit enough to do that.

Believe it or not, running when you’re not already in good shape can do more harm than good. So listen to your body and realize that you may need to lose some weight, realign your body, and strengthen specific areas before you get back out on the roads or on the treadmill.

In the long run, you’ll be able to enjoy every aspect of working out…
