The month’s best Food Festivals from our friends at TastingTable
“As far as we’re concerned, trips are built around the food–not the other way around. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of food events worth traveling to during the month of October. Delicious trips await.
New York City Wine and Food Festival Thursday, 10/7 to Sunday, 10/10
In a city saturated with food events, this one manages to draw some of the biggest crowds of the year, thanks, in part, to the huge amount of talent in attendance; with 200 chefs and 100 wineries participating, the only downside is having to choose between the options. Although some of the marquee events are sold out, there’s still time to solidify your spot at a sustainable dinner with Dan Barber or the grand tasting, which features a concentrated selection of food, wine and spirits from around the country.

Martha’s Vineyard Food & Wine FestivalFriday, 10/15 to Saturday, 10/16 Sneak in your last ferry trip of the season to enjoy wine and food prepared by New England’s best chefs on scenic Martha’s Vineyard. When you’re not trying pours from more than 50 wineries, join Boston chef Marc Orfaly for a lavish dinner in a private home. Those seeking a more hands-on experience might take a class, such as the introductory sake seminar led by sushi guru Tim Cushman, owner of O Ya. Consider it your final farewell until next summer’s Vineyard trips.

Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue Saturday, 10/23
Few things seem more fitting than a weekend devoted to barbecue and whiskey. Venture to the grounds of the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchberg, Tennessee, to watch teams of smoke masters vie for first place in a competition known as “The Jack.” Contestants include last year’s winner, as well as winning teams from other national barbecue championships. But should you get meat fatigue, other Southern delicacies, including fried fruit pies, provide a happy contrast.

Taste of Atlanta Saturday, 10/23 and Sunday 10/24
Expand your mind beyond the peach: This popular gathering displays a delicious edible cross-section of Atlanta’s rich food scene, bringing the city’s causal outlets like the Waffle House within the same stretch as high-end offerings such as Tom Colicchio’s Craft. Take respite from walking the tent-lined streets (and all of the delicious bites on hand) by checking out live demos from the likes of Top Chef’s Kevin Gillespie, or root for your favorite bartender in the Barcraft competition.

The Food Event Sunday, 10/24
Spend the day at the picturesque Saddlerock Ranch, cloistered in the Santa Monica Mountains. As if the view wasn’t enough, you’ll be sampling wine from more than 40 nearby California vineyards, such as Dierberg and Qupé, and treats from Los Angeles restaurants including Street, Michael’s and Palate Food & Wine.”
