The NYC Schools have banned bake sales as of this school year to help limit the amount of sugar and fat students consume. This change is part of a wellness policy that also limits what can be sold in vending machines.

Since about 40% of all students in the NYC schools at the elementary or middle school level are overweight or obese this change is an excellent one and more schools should follow suit.

“We have an undeniable problem in the city, state and the country with obesity,”
said Eric Goldstein, the chief of the office of school support
services. “During the school day, we have to focus on what is healthy
for the mind and the body.”

Children, of course, are disappointed as bake sales helped raise money for sports and trips, but now students can find other activities as fundraisers such as walk-a-thons.
