Salsa – Flavor Without Fat
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 22:10Salsa alone is a low-calorie, low-fat food. Typically we eat salsa with chips, which is not the best choice if you are trying to lose weight, but you can use salsa in other ways to help spice up your food. Prepared salsas are great as a topping for chicken, fish, or meat. Don't forget that you don't just have to use traditional tomato based salsas – try fruit ones too – like the mango salsa in one of the recipes below.
Try some of these recipes from the NY Times that incorporate homemade salsas into dishes:
Mussels on the Half Shell with Salsa Fresca
Grilled Pacific Halibut with Mango Salsa
Zucchini and Avocado Salsa Salad
One of my favorite salsas is the Corn and Chili Tomato-less Salsa from Trader Joe's. It goes great on top of a piece of flounder, tilapia or other thin white fish.
