Too Many Livestock Farms Spread Disease
Sunday, February 13, 2011 10:00Increased livestock farming worldwide, specifically cows and pigs, may spawn more animal disease epidemics, similar to SARS and H1N1 swine flu; warns the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).
Developing countries are at the highest risk; 700 million people rely on animals to generate up to 40% of household income.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2009 Americans consumed 26.9 billion pounds of beef; a total retail value of $73 billion.
