Many people leave nuts out of their eating plan when trying to lose weight, because they think they are too high in calories. However, this is a big mistake.

It’s obvious nuts are high in calories, but studies show that those who eat nuts regularly tend to have a lower BMI in comparison to those who don’t.

In a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 81 healthy adults were told to supplement their diet with almonds every day (320 calories worth); no further instructions about food intake were given. After six months average body weight increased only 0.40 kg.

Here in the UK, the government are encouraging restaurants to agree to include calorie counts on their menus.

But how effective is it likely to be?

The scheme is currently voluntary, but if companies do not co-operate, the government may pass legislation to enforce compliance.

Correlation Studies Aren’t "Junk Science," Especially in Food Science

What is “junk science?” To me, after five years of reporting on health and diet news, it’s any study backed by a group with an agenda, like dairy farmers saying full-fat milk has no health risks, or PETA insisting that a vegan diet is the only optimal diet for humans.

Those studies are tailor-made so that the results say exactly what the benefactors want them to say. That is junk science, not research which looks at a sample population and finds a certain eating habit (or trend) has a negative or positive effect on health, i.e. a correlation; hence the term “correlation study.”

If you’re a fitness guru, you’ve got to keep a clean, healthy image – basically, you have to look good, all the time. Take recently passed Jack LaLanne; the dude was a juicer-selling stud right up until his death, at age 96!

And, Suzanne Somers didn’t make a mint selling ThighMasters with cottage cheese thighs and cankles. It might be shallow, but that’s the deal for fitness celebrities. If it’s too much to handle, go be a rock star, then you can smoke, drink, and snort all you want, and the public will still clamor on your every word.

Parents are more likely to buy less healthy food if sports stars promote it, claims a new study.

Researchers said study participants perceived a product as healthier and of higher quality if an athlete was on it; more than half did not read the nutrition facts.

Parents buying junk food contribute to the global obesity epidemic, especially childhood obesity. According to the World Health Organization, in 2010, 42 million children were overweight worldwide.

Having a few nightcaps might help you fall asleep fast, but a new study claims going to bed tipsy might wake you up in the middle of the night, and leave you tossing and turning, especially women.

Researchers found women with the same blood-alcohol level as men sleep less soundly, compared to going to bed sober.

The overpaid/underachieving Yankees may have some hope in actually cashing in on their exorbitant payroll with newly-svelte hurler CC Sabathia. His weight loss secret? Eschewing sugar-coated razor blades Cap n’ Crunch.

As of last season, Sabathia was the biggest player in the majors at an imposing 6’7″ and 309 lbs. When Sabathia takes the mound this spring, however, he will have less strain on his right knee (where he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus), more stamina, and less cuts on the roof of his mouth.
